Social Movement - Automobile Safety/Political Idealist
Purpose for Change
Nader strongly believed in regulation of cars and automobiles because he believed they were extremely unsafe for civilian operation. His book, "Unsafe at Any Speed" published in 1965, discusses the manufactured issues relevant to automobiles, specifically "The Sporty Corvair". Nader's extensive investigation into the issue of car safety resulted in a slur of legislations passed, marking a historic shift in responsibility for automobile safety from the consumer to the government. He also used secondary effects of automobiles to contribute to his political idealism, such as the problem of air pollution and smog.
Occupation and Socio-economic Background
Ralph Nader went to Princeton University and Harvard Law School. His family are immigrants from Lebanon and are part of the Greek Orthodox minority. His native language is Arabic. To this day, Nader is a social activist and often represents the Independent (Green) Party in presidential elections.
